Winton Motor Carriage Company
Cleveland, Ohio
In 1896 Alexander Winton presented his first prototype vehicle in October, 1896. In 1898, Winton of Cleveland Ohio became the first manufacturer in the United States to advertise his vehicles. His ads proclaimed "All carriages are equipped with top, storm apron, and gong". With a price of $1,000, the Winton vehicles attracted customers and the Winton Carriage Motor Carriage Company quickly became one of the principal manufacturers of his day.
Winton demonstrated one of his new 1899 motor carriages by driving it from Cleveland to New York. This record long distance trip covered 707 miles, took 47 hours and 34 minutes, and averaged 15.5 miles-per-hour. To get publicity and prove the worth of his product, Winton exhibited the auto at Madison Square Garden with mud still on it, just as it came off the road.
One of Winton's more noteable early customers was a Mr. James Ward Packard who traveled the sixty miles from Warren, Ohio to purchase a new Winton. Mr. Packard suffered several break-downs on his trip home. He returned to Cleveland where he offered several suggestions to Mr. Winton. Mr. Winton's response was that if Packard new so much he should try building a better car himself. Later, several generations of Packard owners would be grateful for this suggestion.
In 1924 Winton sold its car manufacturing to General Motors Corp and the company began to exclusively manufacturing marine diesel engines.
