1952 Cadillac Custom 2-Seater Convertible
The following quote is a portion of a document provided by this car's owner:
Grandpa's "Little Caddy" is a Harley Earl Special
This experimental 1952 Cadillac roadster was specially built by General Motors for my grandfather, Harold R. (Bill) Boyer. The design work was personally directed by Harley Earl, the legendary vice-president of GM Styling.
Here's how the car came to be: Grandpa Boyer, who was manager of Cadillac's Cleveland Tank Plant and Mr. Earl were good friends. Grandpay told Mr. Earl that his dream car would be part Cadillac/part sports car. In the early Fifties, era of massive American sedans and tiny British sports cars, the idea of a two-seat Cadillac intrigued Mr. Earl. After a considerable amount of design work and many consultations with Grandpa, construction of this special 1952 Cadillac began.
Starting with a brand-new regular-production 1952 Cadillac, what emerged from the GM Styling Department was this sporty two-seat convertible, 10 inches shorter and a full six inches lower than a standard 62 Series sedan.
Perhaps the most unique thing about the Caddy is the way in which the convertible top completely retracts behind the seat, leaving a flush metal boot. Grandpa told me that his "Little Caddy" inspired Harley Earl to create the first Corvette. The novel top design became the prototype for the upcoming Corvette's top mechanism.
The sports-car influence is clearly seen inside the car. The bench seat is upholstered in the original leather. The right side of the dashboard features airplane-type gauges including manifold pressure, oil pressure, tachometer, and an altimeter....
