Description: 1917 Packard Model E Truck
The United States' entry into World War I create a railroad freight car shortage with the need of the war effort. The slogan "Save a freight car for Uncle Sam" was used to sell more trucks. Also with the introduction of Goodyear's pneumatic tires and newly completed interstate highways, like the Lincoln Highway, trucks could haul freight a longer distance, making them a viable alternative to the railroad. 1917 was Packard's best year for truck production with 7,115 built. The 1917 Packard Model E Series consisted of seven models of various capacities from 1 to 6 1/2 tons. The 1917 Packard Model E Truck pictured above is owned by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.
