1938 Packard Formal Town Car Hearse
This 1938 Packard Formal Town Car Miller custom art-carved hearse was purchased by A.J. Miller of Bellfontaine, Ohio. He bought this straight eight 1938 Packard and created this body to impress Packard officials and to illustrate what Miller could do for them in terms of custom body building. This car features additional bright work and the open drive compartment as well as the split-pane windshield. The cathedral interior is a work of art as are the hand carved wood draping panles on the sides. Miller went to great lengths to impress Packard's management and his plan worked. Packard liked the car and agreed to sell the Miller-bodied cars.
This hearse was sold to a funeral home in Oklahoma City and used throughout the war years. It was traded in the late 1940's and sold to a funeral home in Mexico where it was used extensively. When it had worn out its usefulness, it was sold to a Mexican chicken ranch where it was used to haul chickens. The car was spotted on the ranch by a collector from California who bought the car and had it restored. The car was bought by its present owner, Peoples Funeral Home of Marietta, Ohio, in 1988 and is on loan to the museum.
