1924 Ford Model TT Depot Hack
The depot hack, or station wagon, evolved from the days of horse-drawn wagons used by hotels to carry passengers and their baggage to and from the local train depot. By the early 1920', motoized depot hacks, like this one built on a Ford Model T chassis, had grown in popularity as an inexpensive light-duty commercial vehicle. Many auto manufacturers offered depot hacks by special order through a local dealer. They could be purchased either completely assembled, with the body in kit form, or just a chassis so the desired body style could be built onto it. The vehicle pictured above was purchased new in 1924 by J. Ernest Townsend of Newark, Delaware, and fitted with a red oak body built by a local cabinetmaker. The wagon was used in his butcher business until it was parked in a barn in 1947.
