1968 Shelby Cobra Mustang GT 500
In mid-1964, just as the original Mustang was going into production, Ford contracted their racing partner, Carroll Shelby, to build a limited edition, high-performance version of the Mustang to be sold through select Ford dealers. Taking stock mustangs, Shelby made numerous modifivations designed to improve both acceleration and handling. The front fenders and hood were replaced with lightweight fiberglass, with a firmer suspension and a more powerful engine added. Additionaly, the cars had all the Ford badges removed, complimenting the custom paint and wheels that set them apart from everyday Mustangs. Their extrordinary performance, coupled with aggressive styling and limited production make Shelby Mustangs one of the most collectible Fords ever offered.
