1931 Bentley 8-litre Murphy Convertible Victoria
This 1931 Bentley, chassis no. Y5085, is 1 of 100 8-litre Bentley cars built. The 8-Litre's performance was best available in its day. The car set a new record at the Brooklands Outer Circuit wit a lap speed of 143.11 mph and an 8-Liter limousine loaded with 8 people could easily acheive ove 100 mph. This Bentley is the only one of this famous series to be outfitted with an American made body. On February 13, 1931, Mr. C.H. Mathiessen, Jr., of Santa Barbara, California, ordered the chassis and commissioned the Walter M. Murphy Company in nearby Pasadena to design and build a two-door convertible. The body was designed by Franklin Hershey. The body was an all-metal construction which was unique for Bentley at that time. Mr. Mathiessen owned the car for 16 years. The car was taken to Mexico where eventually it was purchased by Profirio Diaz, grandson of former President of Mexico, Jose de la Cruz Profirio Diaz. In the Sixties, the car was purchased by a Texas collector who had the car shipped to Hoffman and Monfort, noted British car restorers in Henley-on-Thames. Upon completion of the restoration, the Bentley was returned to the U.S.
