1917 Franklin Series 9A Sedan
The Franklin Sedan was a popular year-round car. It seated five people comfortably with sufficient space for hand luggage. The Series 9 Franklins featured a V-shaped windshield eliminating a pillar on each side, removing all onstruction from straight-ahead vision, and reducing wind resistance. The body cowl was designed to join flush with the hood, something never before done on V-front bodies. Franklin engineers worked to minimize the weight of their cars by making the body, fenders, engine base, transmission case, and differential case from aluminum. The wooden frame and air-cooled (no radiator, no water pump, no water) engine contributed further to a better weight/power ratio resulting in better gas mileage and more miles to a set of tires - a considerable expense at that time. The car featured a wooden frame and an air-cooled, 6-cylinder, 30-hp engine. The price of the Series 9A Sedan car was $2,850.
