Description:
|
1961 Lincoln Presidential Limousine - the Kennedy car - photographed by Remarkable Cars at The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan in June, 2005.
Yes, this is the car in which John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. It is part of a powerful image burned into the memory of many Americans. Even if you are too young to have personal memories of that dreadful event, you probably have seen images of this car for those horrible scenes that have been replayed so many times.
The event totally reversed the trend towards visibility that had guided presidential car designers since World War II.
In 1964 the car received major reconstruction including a new engine, titanium armoring, five-layer multiplate bullet-proof glass, addition od a permanent "greenhouse" top, new communication system, and , of course, complete retrimming of the rear compartment.
Users: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Jimmy Carter
Special Coachwork: Hess and Eisenhardt Company
Engine: V-8 OHV, 430 cid, 350 hp
Weight: 9,800 lbs
