1957 Buick Roadmaster Convertible
300hp 364 cu. in. 10:1 compression ratio, overhead valve V8 engine, four-bbl carburetor, Twin-Turbine Variable Pitch DynaFlow automatic transmission, coil-sprung suspension and four-wheel power drum brakes. Wheelbase: 127.5"
With only 4,364 1957 Buick Roadmaster Convertibles built, costing a substantial $4,066, even it its day this was a rare and desirable model that the ensuing decades have only enhanced. Often pictured in ads on small airstrips with the latest Beechcraft in the background the all new 1957 Roadmaster Series 70 featured the traditional Buick ventiports, four on each side, and chevrons on the rear quarters. Whereas all the other Roadmasters had nylon and cloth interiors, only the convertible came standard with rich leather. Unique to the Roadmaster was the extra luxury and safety of a padded instrument panel.
It had been completely restyled inside and out with lower, sleeker, more dramatic looks, and for the first time the fender lines were above the surface of the hood. For 1957 Buicks were three inches lower and three inches longer. The look was referred to as a “low sweep silhouette” that helped to emphasize Buick’s stylish wraparound windshields. A new and improved chassis provided better handling and a more comfortable ride was thanks to Buick’s unique “step-down” and anti-brake drive. Edward T. Ragsdale, GM vice-president and Buick general manager declared the 1957 Buicks, “…a new way of motoring.” The 300hp 364 cubic inch overhead valve V8 engine rocketed the Roadmaster to a 0 to 60mph time of just over 10 seconds and a top speed of 120mph.
This fine example is painted in classic black, while its snazzy red leather, button tucked interior add a tasteful flair. Fitted with a contrasting white vinyl top this Roadmaster looks great either open or closed. New maroon carpets were added when it was restored circa 1990 for an executive working for Dave Thomas.
In fact, if you think you have seen this pristine Roadmaster before – you’re right – as it starred in a nationwide Wendy’s television advertisement in the 1990s. The engine was rebuilt and still runs well, but requires further detailing if the new owner is strictly interested in concours events. Otherwise, this stylish Buick Roadmaster should be ready to roll with the turn of the ignition key.
With V8 performance and such modern amenities as power steering, power brakes, power seats, power windows, an AM radio and a clock, what more is needed?
This Buick Roadmaster convertible is the epitome of American motoring in the late fifties and an excellent venue for attending local or regional cruise and show events. With the top down, wide whitewalls and an original AM radio be prepared to glide down the highway in a true fifties icon.
