1930 Cadillac V16 Sport Coupe
Model 452-A. 175hp 452 cu. in. overhead valve V16 with three-speed synchromesh transmission, leaf spring front axle and torque tube rear axle and four-wheel power assisted brakes. Wheelbase: 148"
A wide variety of bodies were offered on the V16 chassis, most being Fleetwood designs. A few special Fisher bodies were offered as well, either on special order or, in a few cases, as cataloged offerings – as in the case of the smart-looking three-window coupe offered here.
The vendor purchased the car several years ago. While largely complete, it required extensive improvements, and an expensive, multi-year restoration was undertaken. The panel work was in surprisingly good condition, but needed repairs were carefully made, and all body wood was redone.
The engine was replaced many years ago, and was reported by the prior owner to have been rebuilt. An inspection revealed it to be in good condition, so little was needed other than cosmetic improvements.
Cadillacs of the period were identified and registered by engine number and buildsheets are available from Cadillac Historical Services for virtually all sixteen-cylinder cars. Since the engine of this lovely Fisher-bodied coupe was replaced it is impossible to obtain the original documentation for the car. Nonetheless, the vendor determined that the original color was black, and as a result, the car was refinished in that color. Similarly, fragments of original upholstery allowed a similar wool fabric to be selected for the restoration.
The vendor, a noted V16 expert, has one of the largest collections of sixteen-cylinder Cadillac parts in the country, so naturally he was able to source needed parts of high quality quickly and easily, ensuring an authentic restoration.
With the restoration still freshly completed, this V16 Cadillac has received a number of awards at concours and Cadillac club events. In an effort to preserve the restoration, very few road miles have been accumulated, and prospective purchasers are advised that a program of road testing and debugging would be required before embarking upon any major tours or driving events.
As a show car however, this pretty Fisher-bodied coupe is quite ready to do battle in any concours arena, where it is certain to dismay its competitors and reward its owner.
