Description: 1951 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible
180hp 331 cu. in. overhead valve hemispherical head vee eight engine with fluid drive three-speed transmission, independent coil spring front suspension and leaf spring and live axle rear suspension and four-wheel servo-assisted hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 145.5"

We can only guess at this point what lead to the selection of this remarkable New Yorker convertible for the first Canadian royal tour of Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. Many surviving photographs document the use of this car in various cities across Canada where it was used in parades and official functions.

Following its use as a Royal Tour car, the New Yorker was returned to Chrysler where it was sent to Melfort, Saskatchewan to be displayed during the opening of a new Chrysler dealership. While in Saskatchewan, the car was purchased by Mr. Jock Adams of Birch Hills, Saskatchewan.

In 1954, Mr. Adams retired to Scotland, shipping the Chrysler for use in that country. After a while the Adams decided to return to Canada and brought the New Yorker back with them. For several years afterwards, the Chrysler was exercised twice each year: once for a 25 mile trip to Prince George to have the license renewed and the car serviced, and a second time to participate in the Orangemen parade!

In 1961 an auction of the Adams estate was held, and the New Yorker found a new home with Maurice Lefebvre of Melfort, Saskatchewan – who still clearly remembered seeing the same car on the showroom floor ten years earlier.

Lefebvre kept the Chrysler for 29 years, during which time it was used sparingly and on special occasions. He made the car available for the use of visiting dignitaries, including Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker on three separate occasions. Mr. Lefebvre retired to Phoenix, Arizona in the 1980s, eventually deciding to sell the car at auction in 1990.

Purchased by RM Classic Cars, the Royal Tour Chrysler returned to Canada, where it was purchased by Chatham businessman John Bradley. Several years later, Bradley traded the car back to RM, at which time the vendor purchased the car.

Today, this wonderful Chrysler New Yorker remains in low mileage original condition. Much of the paint and all of the upholstery is original to the car, while the top was replaced with NOS fabric in 1990 and remains in excellent condition today. The car has aged gracefully, acquiring a lovely patina and preserving not only its appearance but also its finishes in a truly remarkable way.

Many vintage automobiles are historic, but only a few are historically significant. This Chrysler combines the best of both worlds, and consequently offers a unique opportunity to the astute collector.
