1930 Pierce-Arrow Model A-144 Convertible Coupe
132hp 385 cu. in. straight engine, nine main bearings, dual updraft Stromberg carburetor, four-speed synchromesh transmission, front and rear semi-elliptic leaf springs and four-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Wheelbase: 144"
This handsome, time warp example was refurbished in the 1950s and owned by a well-known Michigan collector until recently when it was purchased by another collector. Prior to its sale, the Pierce had remained with its previous owner for almost 50 years and early on during his ownership he executed a complete body, chassis and mechanical rebuild where necessary. Cosmetically, he repainted this rare Pierce-Arrow a light metallic green, rebuilt the seats, panels, etc. in black vinyl and replaced, or replated all the chrome. Mechanically, little was needed as this example has apparently been a strong running example for the last several decades. Showing just over 73,000 miles, it is believed that this number may be correct from new but difficult to verify.
As well as its stunning bodywork this extraordinary Pierce-Arrow Model A-144 Convertible Coupe is outfitted with the many desirable options and fittings that serious collectors seek and expect on such a grand car, such as dual sidemounts, a full luggage rack, exhaust horn whistle and a stylish rumble seat. In fact, so spacious is the rumble seat on the longer body Model A Pierce-Arrow, it comes with a full size footrest. Entry into the rumble seat is aided by a hatch that is unlocked for opening via a control inside the coupe, a feature seen on only the very finest coachbuilt motor cars of the time.
Another unique feature is a specially designed shotgun box compartment, complete with a wooden case for securing the weapons. There is a further storage compartment behind the seat inside the Coupe. Whereas most of the Pierce-Arrows were fitted with older-style wooden artillery wheels, this Model A-144 Convertible Coupe was fitted with the far more sporting and modern wire wheels finished in red. The Pierce-Arrow’s faded, aging green paintwork (some of which has begun peeling off on the rear section of the body) and black vinyl interior are worn and could be redone; however, the Pierce has a fantastic patina and many collectors may undoubtedly opt to leave this example in its current condition. Additionally, this Pierce has benefited from a recent mechanical service and continues to be a strong running and driving example.
This 1930 Pierce-Arrow Model A-144 is complete and ready to be driven as it runs and drives great displaying excellent oil pressure and ample performance. Unlike the smaller eight-cylinder engines, this Model A144 Convertible Coupe performs with the power, torque and exhilaration seen in only the very best of motor cars built during that time period.
