Description: By 1959, Chevrolet has established the Corvette as a serious sports car. This task was accomplished by balancing style and performance in an appealing and affordable package. Part of the magic included success on the race track. The MK III "Purple People Eater", pictured here, is a fully-restored example of a race-proven first-generation Corvette.

This car was first owned by Nickey Chevrolet of Chicago, Illinois. It was ordered by the dealership with the 290-hp fuel-injected engine, four-speed transmission, positraction rearend and heavy-duty brakes and suspension; the heater and radio were deleted. The car came from the factory in white but was almost immediately repainted purple by the dealership. Other race-inspired changes include a hasp on the hood, safety chains under the car and a large capacity fuel tank.

The Purple People Eater was raced by Jum Jeffords to his 2nd straight BP National Championship. It was also campaigned by its second owner, Bob Spooner, for two years.

The car was purchased by Chip Miller and Ken Heckert at the first Carlisle show in 1974. It was restored by Ken in his Glenville, PA restoration shop. Chip Miller purchased Ken's interest in the car several years ago.

The car has won numerous awards and has the distinction of being part of the original display at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY.
