Description: Monster Garage 1964 Chriscraft Steam Powered Boat
In a quest to harness the awesome power of steam, Jesse and his dream team attempted to convert a 1964 ChrisCraft wooden boat into a turn-of-the-last-century steam launch. The team gutted everything from the boat. They added a new propulsion system and mounted the steam engine and boiler. They created new auxiliaries to keep everything working as well. There was also a custom-made coal bunker installed on the boat. So the ship would not sink on its maiden voyage, all of the cracks, leaks, and holes in the boat were filled and sealed. This is the first time the garage has tried to harness steam power. Hydraulic lines were not up to the task of handling steam at 150 psi and 375 degrees Fahrenheit. All the steam lines were made from heavy, seamless black iron pipe with extreme schedule-80 black iron fittings. All auxiliary non-steam plumbing was made using heavy-walled 1/2" copper pipe annealed to allow the use of flare fittings. The overboard discharge for the bilge pumps was made from a garden hose. THE TEAM: Jesse James, custom-bike builder/designer, West Coast Choppers, Long Beach, CA, Misc Pippa Garner, cartoonist for "Car and Driver Magazine", Santa Fe, NM, Robert Dessert, journeyman machinist/steamboat hobbyist, Standwood, WA, Dick Vennerbeck, steamboat hobbyist, Campbell, CA, Paul Boschan, boilermaker, Carson, CA, Capt. Dave Holden, firefighter/boat restorer, Long Beach, CA, and Jon Baverstock, boat restorer/fabricator, Long Beach, CA. SPECS: EXTERIOR: Height: 28"; Width: 71"; Length: 223"; Weight: Boat: 800 lbs; engine: 120 lbs; empty boiler: 550 lbs: steam auxiliaries: 25 lbs. INTERIOR: Height: 104" (including steam stack); Width: 63"; Length: 117.5". Special Welds: Jesse fabricated a nontraditional mount for the engine and V-drive. He also fabricated a special transition piece to fit from the top of the boiler to the bottom of the smokestack. It was made of copper and he made an invisible TIG weld to join the sections. Special "non-welds" were the 85 hand-rolled tubes inserted into the boiler, which were subsequently pressure tested to 275 psi with no leaks. Additional Acquired or Machined Parts: Robert machined a flange to adapt the engine to the V-drive. Paul supplied a code boiler shell, a reflex water gauge, steam gauge and about 50 lbs of high quality steam pipe fittings. Dick built a displacement lubricator for the engine from pipe fittings and lagged the boiler in wood scraps, which were donated from John's shop. Dick supplied the feed water pump, the injector, the engine and a historic Jesse James train robbery whistle from a train robbed in Missouri in 1859.
