1958 Chevrolet Corvette
Sold as part of a pair at the 2008 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction. See notes below.
Black with Red interior.
1958 NCRS Top Flight convertible. Factory options include: 290hp Fuel Injection, 4-speed manual transmission, 3:70:1 posi-traction and the RPO 684 Big Brake option. In 1958, an elaborate fiberglass ducting system was added to the Big Brake option package that was unique. Along with the oversized finned brake drums, the screens and vent scoops on the brake baking plates, the fiberglass ducting served to cool the brakes. Only 144 Big Brake cars were produced in 1958 and of those only 26 had the 3:70:1 gear ratio in the differential. It was determined by Chevrolet in mid-1958 that the majority of the fiberglass ducting was not effective and was dropped as a part of the RPO684 option. Because of the modifications to the standard Corvette body that were made at the factory, the RPO 684 option was nearly impossible to counterfeit in a 1958 Corvette. Because the Big Brake option was not very streetable and relatively expensive, most of the cars produced with this option were raced. Thus, less than half of the 144 cars built with this option in 1958 are know to exist today. The black color option was not available to order until April of 1958 and is also quite unique for the 1958 Corvette. The interior color is red and the softtop color is black. Because of this color combination and the unique features of the 1958 Corvette, this car is the most beautiful C1 Corvette ever made. This 1958 Corvette was NCRS Top Flighted in August of 2007 and had also undergone a complete body-off restoration finished just hours before judging.
This car is a matched set with Lot #1258.1, which was ordered to be produced with the last 6 VIN numbers to match. Both cars were the 8189th cars make in their respective years making the cars exactly 50 years apart in production numbers. The pair of Corvettes sold for a total of $260,000.
The 2008 Corvette is also in our Photo Gallery.
