1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster
$525,000 2008 Barrett-Jackson Auction Scottsdale AZ
This cream white with contrasting blue leather 1961 Mercedes-Benz 300SL roadster, serial # 19804210002719, is a beautiful example of one of Mercedes-Benz's finest accomplishments. This model was only produced from 1957 thru 1963. The total production run only consisted of 1,858 units. This car features an aluminum alloy engine block and front disc brakes which first appeared in 1961 models.
This 300SL roadster was the recipient of a cosmetic only restoration. Due to its condition, a total restoration was not necessary. It is an European specification car and has retained that status. You will see Euro headlights and its original usage listed in kilometers, 31,587 kilometers to be exact. The engine is a 6-cyliner, single overhead cam with 2996cc displacement (3.0 Liter) with a compression ratio of 9.5:1, producing 235hp @ 5800rpm. It has Bosch Injection Pump Fuel Injection, a tubular space frame with a light alloy body and independent front suspension. It has a top speed listing of 145mph and an 8.7 sec 0-100 KM/hr rating.
To build the roadster from the existing Gullwing design, Mercedes-Benz strengthened the center tunnel portion of the chassis and the sides were revised to allow the fitment of conventional doors. They also improved the handling with wider tracks and wider tires. Also new with this model was the increased compression ratio of 9.5:1 and the increased horsepower to 235hp. This allowed the additional weight to not compromise the performance. This model Mercedes-Benz remains one of the most coveted collectable cars of their famed history and has achieved consistent values in the mid-six figures. This Roadster includes both a Black softtop and an "interior matching" Dark Blue hardtop which is on premise and in the same excellent condition as the rest of this fine automobile.
