Description: 1957 Chevy Bel Air Convertible Custom
$63,000 2008 Barrett-Jackson Auction Scottsdale AZ
Tri-5 Resto-Rod of the highest order and built for cruising fun. The personal car of Hall of Fame driver, racecar builder and high performance driveline components manufacturer Mark Williams. Less then 200 miles since engine build. The body is absolutely straight and has been treated to many coats of black lacquer paint that have been rubbed to a brilliant finish. A custom Carson-style top adds a classic look to the black-on-black Bel Air, while the good-as-new trim package features a California one-piece bumper. Dropped front spindles provide a contemporary stance. GM disc breaks are employed up front. Big Mark Williams disc units with vented steel rotors are used in the back. Under the double-layered reinforced hood lurks a recently-built 436 small block that's designed to provide an abundance of low-end torque while maintaining excellent cruising manners and good fuel economy. It's based on a Chevy 400 block with a Stroker crankshaft, forged aluminum pistons with 10:1 compression, oval track-style camshaft, a Holley intake manifold, 600cfm Double Pumper carburetor and Mallory electronic ignition. Fuel is delivered from a stainless steel tank via a high-flow electric pump while Sanderson headers channel the exhaust through a pair of throaty-sounding Thru-Flo mufflers. A cross-flow aluminum radiator keeps the engine cool, while driver comforts is assured by an Aero air conditioning system. It also has a late model GM power steering and everything is driven by a serpentine belt system. An auxiliary gauge panel keeps tabs on the engine, while an AM/FM radio cassette player with an automatic antenna provides the sounds for cruising. The custom-built driveline includes a GM 700R4 automatic transmission, which provides the benefits of an overdrive, hi-stall torque converter, Mark Williams MMC aluminum driveshaft with 1350-series U-joints and a billet steel transmission yoke. Power is transferred to a Mark Williams modular aluminum rear end, which has 3.40 ratio, 9" Ford gears and 31-spline posi-traction with M-W Master Line forged steel axles.
