Description: 1969 Ford Torino Fastback Talladega
$42,000 2008 Barrett-Jackson Auction Scottsdale AZ
One of 748 Torino Talladega's produced (all in January & February of 1969) to homologate the aerodynamic body for NASCAR racing. This freshly restored example was built in the Atlanta, Georgia plant (as they all were) on February 18, 1969. This rare investment-grade piece of history is listed in the Cyclone Spoiler-Talladega Registry and is documented by Marti Report, the original dealer invoice and the original Build Sheet -- a rarity in itself. The only option available on the Torino Talladega was color, Wimbledon White, Royal Maroon or Presidential Blue. This car sports all original Torino Talladega features including: numbers matching 428cid Cobra Jet engine, 4-barrel carb, cast aluminum valve covers, engine oil cooler, numbers matching C6 automatic transmission, power steering, power front disc brakes, 3.25:1 heavy-duty 31 Spline rear axle, Competition suspension with ultra heavy-duty front & rear springs, stabilizer bar and staggered rear shock absorbers. Special aerodynamic design grille, hood, fenders and bumper. Rolled rockers to accommodate lower racing stance, non-gloss black racing hood & lower rear deck panel, unique cast "T" emblem on the doors and rear deck panel, and "TALLADEGA" identification plate on the door interior trim panels. It would be difficult to find a more stunning and correct example of the rare street version of the car that beat the MOPAR winged cars, by winning 29 1969 Grand National titles and the 1969 Championship. Torino Talladega History: In 1969 the NASCAR wars heated up. GM was pretty much a non-factor, but MOPAR and Ford were going at it full steam. The '68 season had shown just how slippery the new Torino was, but Ford was still outgunned by MOPAR's HEMI. NASCAR would not allow Ford to run the new SOHC 427 (Cammer) so they also developed a 429cid HEMI. For this engine to be legal, Ford needed to sell 500 to the public. Initially the motor was to go in an aerodynamically designed Torino (eventually named the Talladega), but the marketing types changed that and the BOSS 429 Mustang was born. On the new aerodynamic Torino, Ford grafted a more slippery nose on the front end moving the grille flush with the rest of the front. The front bumper was a rear bumper cut and re-welded to fit the front. The rockers were also rolled, allowing the car to be lowered more than stock Torino for racing yet still be within NASCAR regulations. Ford performed these modifications on the Torino fastback and named the aerodynamic car after the newly-built Talladega Motor Speedway in Alabama. As stated above, the racing versions with the new 429cid HEMI engines beat the MOPAR winged cars, winning 29 1969 Grand national titles and the 1969 championship.
