Description: 1964 Amphicar 770 Convertible
$60,000 2008 Barrett-Jackson Auction Scottsdale AZ
This example of Hans Tripple's Amphicar may be the finest restoration in North America. It began as a relatively low mileage, rust-free example and was stripped to bare metal. Rust inhibiting primer was applied and then painted in the original factory white. All operating components were refreshed or replaced where necessary. A complete engine rebuild, transmission rebuild and reworking of all mechanical components including brake lines, wheel and master cylinders were employed. All replacements were either NOS components from the restorer's private stock or remanufactured for the Amphicar. The interior was redone with marine-grade vinyl in the most authentic color and stitch match in the world. The only upgrade to this accurate and correct restoration is the use of an alternator. This Amphicar is known to those who laboriously worked on her for nearly two years as "Pond Lilly". She completed her shakedown cruise this Fall and her hull remained dry as a bone. The original bilge blower and bilge pump have been refreshed. Both bow and stern marine lights have been replaced with new lenses and bulbs. The Amphicar has been refitted with the period-correct Coker tires, which act as the rudder when she is afloat. Pond Lilly cruises comfortably at 65mph on land and 7 knots in the water. This original example includes the complete propeller housing tunnels, which are rare to find without damage. The tunnels extend below the hull for added stability. The hull has been painted with marine-grade paint to inhibit rust and minimize friction in the water. This example, restored by Roger Sallee, will put a smile on the owner's face for years to come. Of the 3,800 originally built, it is estimated that less than 650 remain today.
