1960 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible
$77,000 2008 Barrett-Jackson Auction Scottsdale AZ
This is a spectacular automobile, restored some years ago to concours condition. Featured on the cover of "Collectible Automobile" magazine, and still impressively presented and detailed. The 1960 Chrysler New Yorkers were some of the most tasteful - yet still flamboyant - automobiles ever to come from Detroit. Powered by the 413 "Wedge" engine developing a somewhat awe-inspiring 350 brake hp at 4,600 rpm, the New Yorkers' fins terminated in some of the most attractive taillight lenses ever designed and the almost complete restraint in side-mounted chrome trim gave these cars a refined appearance which vastly enhanced Chrysler's image. Only 556 New Yorker convertibles were built in 1960, a nearly invisible slice of the car market. In contrast, Cadillac built 1,286 Eldorado Broughams in 1960. This beautifully restored New Yorker convertible is a lovely car equipped with all the options including the rare optional pivoting front seats and chrome wire wheels. It even has air conditioning, a very rare option on convertibles in this period. The steering wheel has Chrysler's delicate clear plastic rim. Fully detailed to show car standards including tags and stickers as it wore when it came off the assembly line, it has obviously been restored without shortcuts or compromises and remains a breathtakingly beautiful, sharp automobile that inspires confidence as well as admiration.
