1969 Dodge Charger Daytona Coupe
Final Bid: $ 176,000.00 - Russo & Steele Auction Scottsdale 2008
The 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona was a high performance, limited edition version of the Dodge Charger. It was produced in the summer of 1969 for the sole purpose of winning NASCAR races. And win it did: it won its first race out, the inaugural Talladega 500 in the fall, and with Bobby Isaac behind the wheel, captured the 1970 Grand National championship, NASCAR's highest honor.
One of the famous aero-cars, its special body modifications included a 17 in (431.8 mm) tall stabilizer wing on the rear deck, a flush rear backlight (rear window area), a special sheetmetal "nose cone" that replaced the traditional upright front grille, specific front fenders and hood that were modeled after the upcoming 1970 Charger, stainless steel A-pillar covers and fender mounted tire clearance/brake cooling scoops. The Daytona was built on the 1969 Charger's R/T trim specifications, meaning that it carried a heavy-duty suspension and brake setup and was equipped with a 440 inch Magnum engine as standard.
This 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona is number 149 of the 503. It has been treated to a complete rotisserie restoration. Beginning with a solid rust free California/Nevada car, it was completely disassembled, every piece carefully evaluated and then treated to a Nut & Bolt restoration that still retains near complete originality. The end result of this project is as good as it gets, short of Concours. The original exterior R4/Bright Red color paint is very impressive and has a glass dip finish. Purchased New at Brookhurst Dodge in Garden Grove California, as per Galen Govier, the car then spent much of its life in Nevada, then a few years in a storage building in Canada and then on to it's present home in Arizona. Unfortunately, as with many Daytona's, this car is absent of its build sheet. I do however, have an impressive and easily verifiable history of this car's complete past that starts at the beginning, including pictures taken in the mid 70's as well as, some great documentation. This Daytona has its original numbers matching 440 with a 727 automatic, power steering, and power disk brakes.
