1954 Buick Skylark Convertible
Final Bid: $ 157,300.00 - Russo & Steele Auction Scottsdale 2008
In 1953 Buick introduced the Skylark; a vehicle built to celebrate the company's 50th anniversary and intended to be produced as a limited edition off the Roadmaster line. Designed by the famous Harley Earl, the car had style and performance. The vehicle appeared to be lower than the standard convertibles due to its unique body design. Ventiports, also known as portholes, were absent from the vehicle. Under the hood was 322 cubic inch Nailhead V-8 capable of producing 190 horsepower. Only available as a convertible, at 4300 pounds it has a top speed of over 100 mph and a 0-60 time of 12 seconds. The interior was designed in elegant leather along with many other very desirable standard features. During the introductory year, 1690 examples were produced making it a highly collectable, even by today's standards.
Even fewer examples were produced in 1954, a total of 836. The 322 Nailhead V-8 was again utilized but enhanced to produce 200 horsepower. The 54 model sported the new chrome tailfins designed by Harley Earl. Standard equipment included a Dynaflow automatic transmission, power steering, power brakes, power windows, power top, antenna, Selectronic radio and Kelsey Hays 40 spoke wire wheels. Of the 836 Skylarks produced in 1954, it is believed that fewer than 50 exist today.
This example is so stunning it was chosen by the famous car artist Dave Synder as the model for his limited edition print titled '1954 G.M. Motorama'. It has been the recipient of a full frame off Concours restoration and is finished in factory correct Carlsbad Black with red leather interior and has been upgraded with a black Stayfast convertible top. A signed limited edition print by Dave Synder featuring this 54 is included in the sale.
