1966 Shelby GT350 Vintage Racer Coupe
Final Bid: $ 139,700.00 - Russo & Steele Auction Scottsdale 2008
In vintage racing circles the name Cobra Automotive enjoys a well-earned reputation for fielding the most competitive entries on a consistent basis throughout the major national tracks and vintage sanctioning bodies. One of their premier clients commissioned the "cost is no object" preparation of this genuine 1966 GT350 Shelby Mustang.
NOT a clone or 'ricky-racer' look-a-like, SFM 6S293 was purchased by Mr. James D. Overlin of South Carolina who, according to the most recent edition of the Shelby American Automobile Club Registry, prepared the car to "R Model" specifications to competitively participate in SVRA, HSR, RMVR and VSCCA vintage events.
Having numerous successes in the past almost 40 years, it has received the coveted "Medallion Status". In addition, recent competition history includes: top 5 finishes at Road America, Sebring, VIR, Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, and most recently allowed to compete at the 2007 Shelby American National Convention in Salt Lake City Utah.
While being an absolute brute on the track, the car's performance was developed while keeping an eye on authenticity. It still wears the front disc/rear drum brake setup, original sheet metal and body panels. The interior, while stripped of unnecessary weight still contains the original dash. The current owner firmly believes it should compete the way Shelbys were meant to compete in the 1960's.
This car represents what a vintage racecar can become when the owner sticks to the philosophy of keeping true to the spirit of the original car, and takes a "money is no object" approach to the maintenance and development of a first-class vintage racer. This car is without question the best of the best in vintage racing today, and will get you into just about any major vintage racing event on the planet and has the right stuff to put you on the podium!
Do not be confused with the many vintage competition vehicles offered in the market today. SFM 6S293 is not only a real GT350 Shelby Mustang, the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and race proven prowess of Cobra Automotive has resulted in a "REAL" vintage race machine with a proven winning history and result. Not for the "faint of heart" the sale of this vintage racer presents a rare opportunity indeed to instantly garner a well-sorted and highly competitive example that is ready for serious vintage events.
