1965 Sunbeam Tiger Shelby Convertible
Final Bid: $ 115,500.00 - Russo & Steele Auction Scottsdale 2008
This rare 1965 SUNBEAM TIGER MK1, a CUSTOM BUILT and HIGHLY MODIFIED Shelby, is number 80 from the Jensen production line of 3763 MK1's made. With three prior registered California owners, this documented original Sunbeam Tiger MK1, vehicle identification number B9470080 LRXFE, was a true California survivor prior to this project. The original steel unibody, hood, doors and trunk lid were acid dipped at the onset of the project exposing a perfect, rust free, unmolested bare metal Tiger prepared for a rotisserie restoration, reengineering and extensive modification process. Accompanying this Tiger is the original Sunbeam Tiger Owners Association (STOA) Certificate of Authenticity, all historic California DMV registration information, all restoration invoices, hundreds of detailed restoration photos (completed in November 2007) and a collection of vintage Sunbeam Tiger advertisements. A complete history of the Sunbeam Tiger and the involvement of Carrol Shelby can be found at; www.tigersunited.com/history/tdev.asp
Only heavily considered new components and contemporary technology were used to create this one of a kind Sunbeam Tiger. The goal was simple; to discreetly, yet significantly, improve upon the original design direction without compromising the original aesthetic intent while aggressively mechanically improving upon every aspect of the Tiger. The result is sensational; the utopian blend of refined European Styling and contemporary American Muscle!
The engine was built by Tillack & Co., LTD and is a fuel injected, stroked 331 Sportsman 302 small block V8 producing 389hp @ 6100rpm and 361lbs of torque @ 5100rpm. The approximate 2400lbs street weight and 0.162 power-to-weight ratio provides monstrous yet manageable strength for this power-house of a Street Race Car. The major engine components are as follows; Carrilo rods, Scat crankshaft, AFR 185 aluminum heads, SRP aluminum pistons, Comp camshafts, Hydrolic roller lifters, Melin high performance oil pump and an Aviaid competition oiling system. Additional components include; custom oil cooler, Fluidyne high performance aluminum radiator, custom aluminum pedal assembly, G-Force T-5 transmission, Corvette rear differential with 3.36 gearing, custom engineered adjustable IRS (unibody reinforced to support IRS), custom front adjustable coil over suspension, custom upper and lower A-arms, race reinforced Tiger front cross member, custom adjustable lower sway bar, custom Dawson race headers, custom 3" ovular Jet Hot Ceramic Coated exhaust, Spin Tech race mufflers, 22 gallon Fuel Safe race cell and a Halon fire extinguisher system.
The engine bay has been smoothed to conceal all electrical wires and the firewall has been modified to accommodate the fuel injection system. The windshield has been modified 2" lower than stock to give the Tiger a lower more aggressive ride. The custom designed aluminum hood was fabricated by Urs Gretener of Gretener's Bodyworks on the original steel hood frame. Wheel wells accommodate Billet Specialties aluminum Rebel wheels, 215/35/18 and 255/35/18 BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW-2, adjustable Carrera Racing shocks and Wilwood disk brakes.
The body paint is a custom mixed PPG Metallic Tungsten, prepared by Mark Rapson at the PPG North American Corporate Headquarters for this Tiger only. The dual Shelby racing stripes are PPG Black Liquid Crystal. The supple red leather matches the red pin striping. The dash presents figure grain Brazilian Rosewood signed by Carrol Shelby.
This Tiger has been driven less than 75 miles and with more than $250k invested, absolutely NO expense has been spared to create this Tiger.
