1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 Convertible
Final Bid: $ 93,500.00 - Russo & Steele Auction Scottsdale 2008
This beautiful red Shelby has been completely disassembled and the unibody cleaned in a tank. The engine was re-built by Bob Kleiner, a Ford and Shelby enthusiast from Dubuque, IA. Oil passages were chamfered, forged pistons, a windage tray, all new bearings; camshaft and valve train, high volume oil pump as well as many other parts were installed. The block was machined .030 over and align-bored. The crankshaft I piston assembly was balanced and blue-printed. Randy Honkala of Scottsdale, well known in the trade as being meticulous and highly skilled, finished the reassembly and paintwork in early 1995.
This car has a Marti Report and has been listed in the Shelby American World Registry for the past 25 years. According to the registry, there were only 402 GT500 convertibles produced. It has a Police Interceptor engine, a heavy-duty C6 transmission and a 3.91 Traction Loc rear end. It rides on Koni shocks, Shelby polished 10 spokes and Goodyear Eagle ST tires. The entire oversized exhaust system has been Jet Coated; it should last almost forever. All body parts except the right front fender (very slight crease on the detail line) are original, It is a solid car that will be relatively easy to turn into a concours car, if that is your desire. It has low miles (57k).
