Description: 1979 Fiat 2000 Convertible
Final Bid: $ 12,100.00 - Russo & Steele Auction Scottsdale 2008
The Sports Spider was introduced in November 1966 at the Turin Auto Show and was ultimately the company's most successful commercial venture at the time. The Sports Spider utilized a shorter floor pan and its wheelbase was also shorter than it's coupe brethren. The Spider's unit body was designed and produced by Italian carozzeria Pininfarina. the Spiders were built till 1985 (production figures vary but a good estimate would be 200,000).

The engine utilized in the Spider was a double overhead cam, aluminum crossflow head version of the sedan's pushrod unit. It started in 1966 with a capacity of 1438 cc progressively increasing to 1608, and finally to 1995 cc in 1979. This family of engines was designed by ex-Ferrari chief engineer Aurelio Lampredi and in one form or another remained in production into the 1990s giving it one of the longest production runs in history. The double overhead cam (DOHC) version was the first mass manufactured DOHC to utilize reinforced rubber timing belts, an innovation that would come into nearly universal use in the decades after its introduction.

This car is a 1979 (Spider 2,000) example - with less than 8K miles on the odometer. It is metallic light blue with cream interior, 1,995CC (122Cu), desired 5 speed manual transmission, fuel injected, electronic ignition, 2 barrel venturi Weber carburetion, air conditioned, wood dashboard and 4 wheels power disk brakes. The original window sticker that comes with the car shows all the options that the car came with and - of course are still with the car. This car was very rarely driven by its previous two owners so it looks today as if it has just left the production line. It runs very smooth and shifts very crisply.
