Description:
|
1961 Mercedes-Benz 300D Limousine
VIN: 4189010-10-00240
General Lucius Clay, former Military Governor of Germany, who had been asked by President John F. Kennedy to go to Berlin as his personal representative to defuse the growing crisis ther, originally purchased this Mercedes-Benz 300d Limousine in 1961. Clay needed a German-built car to go back and forth across the Berlin Wall to confer with his former Russian colleagues, Marshalls Sokolovsky and Zukhov. The Cadillac limousines owned by the American Mission in Berlin were too obvious and too easily followed by reporters at a time when non-public diplomacy was required. After General Clay's successful tour of duty, this car was donated to the American Mission in Berlin. It is thought that this is the only German car ever owned by the American diplomatic service in Germany.
