Description: !962 Jaguar/Cunningham XK-e Factory Lightweight Race Car
Jaguar's aerodynamic finned D-Type racing cars won the 24-Hours of Le Mans endurances in 1955, 1956 and 1957; it was a purpose-built race car that evolved from the less-sculpted C-Type that won in both 1951 and 1953.
After losing some podium finishes to Aston Martin and Ferrari between 1958 and 1961, Jaguar decided it was time to roll out the sensational E-Type - the successor to the D-Type.
The factory built a dozen alloy-bodied racers and this roadster with detachable hardtop was campaigned by American sportsman/millionaire Briggs Cunningham from Costa Mesa, CA. The white body and dark blue stripes are the U.S. International racing colors. The number 14 car was one of three sequentially-numbered lightweights Cunningham's team took to Le Mans in June 1963. In 1962, Cunningham and Roy Salvadori had finished fourth overall at Le mans in an E-Type fixed-head fastback coupe. Drivers Walt Hansgen and Augie Pabst were paired to co-drive the number 14 car, which left the race early due to problems with the German ZF five-speed transmission the team had installed with the hope that one additional gear would reduce engine revs down the Le Mans' nearly 3.5 mile Mulsanne Straight.
